The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has adopted Adewole Adebayo, its 2023 presidential candidate, as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 election.
Adebayo emerged through a consensus arrangement at the SDP
national convention held in Bauchi on Saturday.
The party also endorsed Sadiq Gombe as national chairman
during the convention.
The adoption followed motions moved by party leaders,
including state chairmen, and supported by delegates at the event.
Speaking at the convention, Adebayo lamented the economic
hardship in the country, saying prevailing government policies had made
hardworking Nigerians appear lazy.
“For many who are working very hard, the economic policies
of the government of the day make them look lazy because when they go home,
their children ask why there is no food, why school fees are unpaid, and why
sick relatives cannot access healthcare,” he said.
The former presidential candidate also spoke about the
plight of Nigerians abroad.
“Why am I in China hiding from immigration just to earn a
living when I have a country of my own?” he asked.
Adebayo criticised what he described as poor leadership and
warned against attempts to drift towards one-party rule.
He commended Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi state, for
allowing the convention to hold peacefully.
The SDP standard-bearer urged Nigerians to use democratic
processes to effect change.
After being sworn in alongside members of the national
working committee (NWC), Gombe stated that the SDP remains best placed to
provide alternative leadership for the country.
“We want to assure Nigerians that the SDP will provide the
needed alternative platform for the rescue mission of this country,” he said.
Gombe pledged transparent and committed leadership in line
with the constitution and the party’s principles.
Earlier, Usman Bugaje, chairman of the national convention
committee, criticised the state of governance in the country.
Bugaje cited insecurity, rising petrol prices, unemployment,
poor infrastructure, and widespread poverty as major challenges confronting
Nigerians.
He accused the ruling party of attempting to suppress
opposition voices and shrink the democratic space.
“The attempt by the ruling party to block the political
space and eliminate competition and opposition is one of the most despicable
offences today,” he said.
Bugaje also alleged that institutions such as the judiciary
and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were being used for
political purposes.
“That despite all these challenges, you are able to come in
your numbers is a measure of your commitment and determination to change your
fortunes for good,” he said.
“No sacrifice is too great in changing the fortunes of the
nearly 300 million oppressed people.”
