Sanwo-Olu approves N50,000 relief package for Lagos workers

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a N50,000 relief package for workers across the state for the month of May as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising economic pressures.

The governor announced the measure on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day commemoration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, themed “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the payment would be added to workers’ May salaries and would be subject to further review.

He said the initiative was part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to supporting workers across all sectors, noting that Lagos continues to depend on the contributions of teachers, health workers, artisans, and civil servants to sustain its growth.

“Lagos is great because of you—the teacher who stays after hours, the nurse who takes a third shift, the artisan who passes on their trade to the next generation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged prevailing economic challenges, including inflationary pressures and global energy shocks, stressing that government must continue to respond with practical support for workers.

“For this May, there will be an additional N50,000 for every worker in Lagos State, across board, irrespective of grade,” he announced.

He added that the gesture would be reviewed as necessary in subsequent months.

The governor also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, infrastructure development, and public service delivery.

He said the state government remained open to dialogue with organised labour, noting that engagement with unions is essential for sustaining industrial harmony.

Speaking on security, Sanwo-Olu described safety as fundamental to productivity, adding that ongoing investments in security infrastructure, community policing, and surveillance systems are aimed at ensuring a safer environment for workers and residents.

He further stated that his administration would focus on completing key projects before the end of its tenure, including transport infrastructure, housing delivery, and pension obligations.

Sanwo-Olu added that the success of his administration would be measured not by announcements, but by completed projects and sustained reforms.
