Samuel Ajose Withdraws from Lagos Governorship Race, Backs Hamzat

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and governorship aspirant, Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, has withdrawn from the 2027 Lagos State governorship race and declared his support for Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat.

Ajose announced his decision on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, while addressing his supporters in Lagos. He said the choice was made after deep reflection and was primarily driven by the need for party unity and the overall interest of the people.

“I know it is a very tough decision. I still struggled with it overnight, too. But when I woke up in the morning, I had my peace,” Ajose stated.

He added: “Everything that everybody will benefit from, even if I won’t be the governor, you are still going to benefit because you have made sure that you took care of the interests of everybody. And I think that’s the best.”

The former aspirant further announced that he and his supporters would actively participate in Hamzat’s campaign, saying he would take up a significant role in the structure.

"In the interest of the party, I, Dr Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, have decided that I will let go. I will support Dr. Hamzat, and we are going to be part of his campaign, and we are going to take a very important position in his campaign,” he declared.

Ajose’s withdrawal comes weeks after another aspirant, Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), also stepped down from the race and endorsed Hamzat, following the reported endorsement of the Deputy Governor by President Bola Tinubu and APC leaders in Lagos State.

The developments suggest a growing consolidation of support for Hamzat within the Lagos APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
