Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has described the fight against terrorism as a “religious obligation” while criticising the involvement of parties he accused of having “hands stained with the blood of innocent men, women, and children.”
Gumi made the remarks in a Facebook post on Saturday following the announcement that US forces, in collaboration with the Nigerian military, eliminated Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the second-in-command of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) globally.
“It’s a religious obligation to annihilate terrorists, but not with Beelzebub and hands stained with the blood of innocent men, women, and children,” the cleric wrote.
The joint operation was confirmed by US President Donald Trump, who stated that American and Nigerian forces carried out a precision mission based on extensive intelligence.
Trump described al-Minuki as one of ISIS’s most active figures, involved in coordinating attacks and supporting operations targeting both Americans and African communities.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the success of the operation, hailing it as a heavy blow to ISIS.
Al-Minuki was reportedly a key operative linked to ISIS’s activities in Africa, including roles in media, weapons development, and economic operations for the group.
His elimination is seen as a significant setback for the terrorist organisation’s networks on the continent.
Sheikh Gumi’s reaction underscores ongoing debates in Nigeria about counter-terrorism efforts, methods, and partnerships, even as authorities celebrate the removal of a high-value ISIS target.
