President Tinubu, Danjuma to Headline Gowon Autobiography Launch in Abuja


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd), former Minister of Defence, will lead the public presentation of former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon’s (Rtd) long-awaited autobiography on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Abuja.


The event is scheduled to take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and is expected to attract a high-profile gathering of government officials, military veterans, diplomats, and other prominent dignitaries from across Nigeria.


President Tinubu will feature as the Special Guest of Honour, while Gen. Danjuma, a former Chief of Army Staff, will perform the official unveiling of the book.The 881-page autobiography, published by Havilah Group, offers an intimate and personal account of Gen. Gowon’s life, his leadership journey, and his reflections on some of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s history, including the 30-month Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970).


It also chronicles his early years and his emergence as the country’s leader during a turbulent period. Born in 1934, Gowon assumed office as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief on August 1, 1966, and served for nine years.


After leaving office, he earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Warwick in 1984. Since then, he has dedicated himself to peacebuilding, national development, and spiritual leadership.


His notable post-retirement initiatives include the “Nigeria Prays” movement and sustained advocacy against Guinea Worm, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria through the Yakubu Gowon Centre. He also serves as Nigeria’s National Goodwill Ambassador for the control of viral hepatitis.
