Presidency Warns Against Religious Disinformation, Deepfake Videos

The Presidency has issued a strong warning against the spread of religious disinformation and the use of deepfake videos, describing them as dangerous tools capable of destabilising national unity and public trust.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Daniel Bwala, and relevant government officials have raised the alarm over the rising sophistication of AI-generated content designed to incite religious tensions, spread hate, and create fear among Nigerians.

The warning comes amid growing concerns that malicious actors are deploying doctored videos and manipulated audio to misrepresent public officials, exacerbate ethno-religious divides, and undermine national cohesion, especially as the country approaches future electoral cycles.

Authorities urged citizens to exercise caution, verify information before sharing, and refrain from spreading unverified content that could inflame tensions.

They emphasised that beyond legal consequences, every Nigerian has a patriotic responsibility to protect the country from such divisive tactics.

The government reiterated its commitment to combating disinformation while calling on media organisations, social media platforms, and the public to join efforts in promoting information integrity.
