Political Thugs Disrupt NDC Congress in Enugu

The state congress of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu was on Monday disrupted by suspected political thugs who invaded the venue and ordered delegates out of the hall.

The incident occurred at Aborigene Hall, Enugu, shortly after party members gathered for the congress. The thugs reportedly went on a rampage, pulling down banners before forcing everyone to leave the premises.

The disruption happened barely 24 hours after former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso formally defected to the NDC in Abuja on Sunday.

According to party sources, the crisis erupted after a motion was moved for the dissolution of the protem State Working Committee. An angry party member alleged that some new entrants were attempting to hijack the party structure.

“They joined the NDC just yesterday… now they want to hijack the entire structure,” the party member said.

Despite the disruption, the congress later continued, and the Enugu State chapter of the NDC elected Dr. Johnpaul Anih as its new State Chairman. Anih, a former Special Assistant on Youth Affairs to ex-Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, emerged victorious at the event.

The development highlights emerging cracks and power struggles within the newly enlarged NDC following the high-profile defections of Obi and Kwankwaso.
