Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Sunday flagged off the rehabilitation of the N1.3 billion Ubakala Water Scheme and Ariaria Water Scheme in Aba as part of activities marking his three years in office.
The governor performed the flag-off at Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area. He announced that both the Ubakala and Ariaria projects would be executed and commissioned simultaneously.
Otti expressed gratitude to Mercy Corps for their support and resilience in partnering with the state on the initiative.
“N1.3 Billion is a lot of money and we cannot take it for granted,” he said. He emphasised the critical importance of potable water to human survival, noting that many people have lost their lives due to unsafe water sources.
The governor said his administration has prioritised water infrastructure as one of its key projects to ensure access to clean water across Abia State.
Otti also disclosed that the Aba Regional Water Project has reached 95% completion. The State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, explained that the projects align with the Abia Integrated WASH Accelerated Programme.
He noted that previous attempts to flag off the projects were disrupted, including an incident where the financier was kidnapped en route.
He credited Governor Otti’s leadership and Mercy Corps’ intervention for securing private financing for the rehabilitation.
A representative of Mercy Corps, Rabiu Sani, said the organisation operates in over 40 countries and is focused on improving livelihoods through sustainable interventions. The scope of work includes rehabilitation of existing boreholes, testing and repairing pumps.
The water schemes form part of the broader efforts by the Otti administration to revamp public utilities and improve access to potable water since assuming office in 2023.
