Public affairs analyst Mahmud Jega has warned that divisions within the opposition could severely undermine their chances in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, Jega identified the splitting of opposition forces as the primary obstacle to mounting a credible challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He noted that while opposition leaders had earlier signalled unity, particularly after a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, where they resolved to field a single candidate recent developments suggest otherwise.
“There is still a big problem. The opposition forces... said they will give the ruling APC a big fight next year by uniting,” Jega said.
He highlighted that apart from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) maintaining cohesion, the two remaining PDP governors in Bauchi and Oyo states appear to be aligning with another small party, possibly to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the race.
Jega warned that if the opposition fields multiple candidates such as a Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket on the National Democratic Congress (NDC), an Atiku-Amaechi ticket on the ADC, and a Jonathan-Bala Mohammed ticket elsewhere it would make the contest extremely difficult for them.
