Opah Defeats Former Minister, Clinches Abia APC Governorship Ticket

Businessman Chief Eric Opah has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State after defeating former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh, in the party’s primary election.

The primary, held on Thursday, May 22, 2026, saw Opah record a landslide victory. According to the APC governorship and House of Assembly Returning Officer, Mr. Bato Nylong, Opah polled 126,977 votes while Ikoh came a distant second with 5,905 votes.

Announcing the result, Nylong declared Opah as the winner and the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Opah’s emergence marks a significant shift in Abia APC’s political landscape as the party seeks to unseat the opposition in the next general elections.

The businessman has been actively consulting with stakeholders across the state and positioning himself as a candidate focused on transparency, industrialisation, and job creation.

This victory comes after weeks of intense campaigns and internal party activities, including screening and stakeholder engagements.

Opah was recently cleared by the party amid circulating rumours of disqualification, which the APC firmly debunked.

The outcome is expected to reshape the political calculations in Abia State ahead of the 2027 polls.
