Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a major coordinated assault by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on the Headquarters of 27 Brigade in Buni Gari, Yobe State, neutralising at least 50 insurgents.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Army on Saturday, the attack occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday as terrorists advanced from multiple directions, targeting both the brigade headquarters and the Buni Gari checkpoint.
The assailants initially approached from the western flank, reinforced via the southern axis near Ganinga Junction, and attempted to encircle troops from the south-western side.
The military reported that troops responded with strong defensive firepower, tactical manoeuvres, and determination, preventing any breach of the camp.
"No part of the military formation was breached, as the integrity of the location remained fully intact," the statement emphasised.
Significant Recoveries and Air SupportGround troops recovered a substantial cache of weapons, including:
8 AK-47 rifles
2 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs)
2 Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) tubes
5 RPG bombs
3 RPG chargers
Boxes of 7.62mm ammunition, loaded magazines, bandoliers
3 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) canisters
The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI provided crucial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support, conducting precision strikes that accounted for additional terrorist casualties among those fleeing the scene.
Casualties and Follow-up OperationsThe Army confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives in the engagement, while some personnel sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. A number of Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and gun trucks also sustained minor damage.
Follow-up operations are underway, with troops and volunteer forces pursuing fleeing terrorists to prevent any regrouping in the area. Human intelligence and exploitation of the general area suggest additional insurgent bodies along withdrawal routes.
This successful repulsion highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to counter insurgency threats in the North-East region.
