Team Nigeria has won its first set of medals at the ongoing CAA Senior Athletics Championships.
Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi won silver and bronze,
respectively, in the women’s discus throw on the first day of the competition
held at the University of Ghana stadium in Accra.
The competition was Oladipo’s international debut for
Nigeria after the British-born 27-year-old had represented her country of birth
at multiple competitions.
Amaechi continues her impressive run for Nigeria since her
debut in 2022. She had won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham
and, a year later, clinched gold at the African Games in Accra.
Tobi Amusan breezed to the women’s 100m hurdles final after
clocking a season’s best of 12.82s. She remains the overwhelming favourite to
win her third African Athletics Championships title when the final takes place
later on Wednesday.
There was a little hiccup for Favour Ashe in the men’s 100m
heats after he was adjudged to have beaten the gun. He was initially
disqualified, but Nigeria protested his ejection and subsequently won the case.
The 24-year-old was granted a solo run, and he clocked 10.55 seconds, which was
sufficient to book a place in the semi-final.
Ashe will be joined in the semis by compatriot Chidera
Ezeakor, while Rosemary Chukwuma also advance in the women’s 100m race.
