Team Nigeria sealed two more relay tickets for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
The athletes secured Nigeria’s representation in both the
women’s 4x100m and mixed 4x400m following redeeming performances in the
repechages on Sunday at the World Athletics Relay in Gabrone, Botswana.
Nigeria had already booked World Athletics Championships
qualification in the mixed 4x100m on Saturday.
After a disappointing first day, the mixed 4x400m team
comprising Chidi Okezie, Nathaniel Ezekiel, Taiwo Mary Kudoro, and Patience
Okon George produced their season’s best of 3:12.88 to finish second in heat
two of the repechage. They and South Africa earned the global ticket as the
first two teams in the race.
The women’s 4x100m team put the frustration of the previous
day behind them and blitzed to the finish line in 42.94 seconds. They finished
behind France and clinched the World Championship ticket.
However, Nigeria’s fortunes were mixed in the only final the
country qualified for at the Relays. Nigeria finished sixth in the mixed 4x100m
final, only ahead of the UK and the Netherlands. But the team earned a ticket
to the inaugural World Ultimate Championships for finishing in the top six of
the race.
