The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday, May 1, 2026, commenced nationwide congresses ahead of its maiden National Convention scheduled for May 9 in Abuja.
Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, said the party is holding ward and polling unit congresses on May 1 and 2, followed by local government congresses on May 4, state congresses on May 4, and zonal congresses on May 6.
The National Convention, where party officials will be elected, will hold on May 9. The convention will host accredited delegates and INEC officials who are expected to monitor proceedings in line with the Electoral Act.
“Preparations for the convention have been concluded by the planning committee. All is now set for the big event,” Abdulsalam said. He added that security agencies have been notified to ensure safety for delegates and guests.
The NDC had earlier notified INEC of the revised timetable in a letter dated April 15, 2026, jointly signed by National Chairman Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe and National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu. The party said the review followed its National Executive Committee meeting on March 25.
According to the party, electronic membership registration closed at noon on April 29, with the updated register submitted to INEC as required by law.
The NDC also fixed May 22 for the start of its primaries for various elective offices, with a separate National Convention slated for May 29 to ratify candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party officials said the phased congresses are designed to ensure an orderly emergence of structures from the grassroots to the national level in compliance with its constitution.
