NASU, SSANU Protest, Shut UI Gates, Disrupt Activities at ABU, UNILORIN

The main gates of the University of Ibadan (UI) were locked yesterday as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) joined a nationwide industrial action.

The strike, over the Federal Government’s delay in renegotiating and implementing the 2009 agreement, disrupted access to Nigeria’s premier university, leaving students, staff, and visitors stranded outside the campus.

Workers gathered at the entrance to protest the prolonged delay in addressing welfare issues, salary arrears, and conditions of service.

NASU UI branch Chairman, Oluwafemi-Michael Ogunlade, said the action followed years of unresolved negotiations and broken government assurances despite several ultimatums issued by the unions.

He added that members exhausted all dialogue avenues before embarking on the strike, but remained open to meaningful engagement with the government.

The protesting non-teaching staff, joined by SSANU members, urged the Federal Government to urgently conclude the agreement to prevent further disruption to academic activities.

The industrial action has also paralysed operations at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, with the Senate Building, library, sickbay, and Works Department shut down, disrupting water and electricity supply.

SSANU ABU Chairman, Shuaibu-Ahmed Halilu, said the protest complied with the national directive.

At the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), activities were equally grounded as the unions insisted on a 45 per cent salary increase and full implementation of the 2009 agreement, rejecting the government’s 30 per cent offer.
