Makinde Faction Set to Unveil Turaki-Led PDP Caretaker Committee Today

The Governor Seyi Makinde-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is poised to unveil a 10-member caretaker committee led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN) today, Monday, May 4, 2026.

Multiple sources familiar with the developments told Punch that Turaki emerged as the consensus choice during a meeting of the Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja on Sunday.

The committee is expected to be formally announced at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for today.

Opening the BoT session, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara vowed that the PDP would not yield to what he called “political brigands,” stressing that the party’s institutional integrity remains intact despite ongoing internal conflicts.

He highlighted alleged sabotage within the party and efforts by some elements to weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wabara explained that the BoT stepped in to stabilise the party following the Supreme Court’s April 30, 2026 split 3-2 judgment, which nullified the Makinde-backed national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025.

The court ruled that the convention violated existing restraining orders.

He noted that the BoT has secured the required two-thirds majority of the NEC to convene today’s meeting and has notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The caretaker committee is expected to oversee party reconciliation, conclude pending congresses, and prepare for future electoral processes.

In a related development, sources close to the Oyo State governor disclosed that Seyi Makinde is expected to formally declare his presidential ambition for the 2027 election on the PDP platform within the week.

Reacting to the moves, the rival faction aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, through its National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed, dismissed the BoT actions as illegal and lacking legitimacy.

The faction insisted there is no leadership vacuum and urged stakeholders to ignore the planned NEC meeting.

The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged leadership crisis, with parallel structures and legal battles creating uncertainty within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
