The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) says it will begin charging motorists for on-street parking.
Adebisi Adelabu, general manager of LASPA, shared this
during a courtesy visit to Akeem Dauda, chairman of Ikeja LGA.
Adelabu said the visit was aimed at sensitising the local
government leadership on LASPA’s activities, its expansion plans, and the
proposed on-street parking scheme.
She said the pilot phase of the initiative would begin within the year in select local government areas, including Ikeja.
The LASPA general manager said the authority was established
to ensure proper parking management across the state, adding that
responsibility for parking management was previously under local governments
before it was transferred to LASPA by the conference of the 57 LGAs and LCDAs
in Lagos.
According to her, the scheme is expected to improve parking
management, enhance traffic flow, and create jobs for residents in the affected
areas.
Adelabu said local governments and local council development
areas would benefit from the initiative based on their level of collaboration
and support for the implementation of the scheme.
She added that LASPA remains open to suggestions from local
governments and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the
project.
In his remarks, Dauda commended LASPA’s efforts at improving
parking management in Lagos and pledged the support of Ikeja LGA for the
initiative.
The council chairman also called for increased sensitisation
to educate residents on proper parking practices.
