The Lagos State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have officially thrown their weight behind the governorship ambition of Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat ahead of the 2027 elections.
The endorsement was announced by NLC Lagos State Chairperson Agnes Funmi Sessi and TUC Lagos leader Abiodun Aladetan during the 2026 World Labour Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Friday.
This latest backing reinforces organised labour’s longstanding alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.
The NLC and TUC had previously supported the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat ticket in both the 2019 and 2023 gubernatorial elections.
The move further strengthens Hamzat’s position, coming after endorsements from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), APC State Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, and other key party stakeholders.
Labour leaders described the endorsement as a push for continuity in governance and sustained development of the state.
Hamzat, reacting to the growing support, expressed gratitude to his backers and pledged to build on the current administration’s achievements with “integrity, inclusiveness, and continuity.”
Political observers view the labour unions’ support as strategically significant, given their strong grassroots mobilisation capacity, especially in the transport, public service, and informal sectors.
