Kwara APC Chieftain warns against automatic tickets for lawmakers

The President of Orisun Igbomina, Gbenga Awoyale, has cautioned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara South Senatorial District against any move to grant automatic tickets to serving members of the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Friday, Awoyale said democracy must be guided by competition, accountability and the free choice of party members.

He stressed that no elected official should be considered entitled to a return ticket without passing through the party’s democratic nomination process.

The president warned that the growing perception in some quarters that certain serving lawmakers could secure automatic return tickets through political influence or internal arrangements was unhealthy for party unity and discouraging to other aspirants.

“Every aspirant, whether incumbent or newcomer, must pass through the same party nomination process and earn the trust of delegates and party members through performance, consultation, acceptability and political engagement,” he said.

“Democracy is not hereditary, neither is representation a personal entitlement.”

The APC chieftain noted that concerns had intensified in Kwara South following renewed political discussions surrounding the senatorial seat currently occupied by Lola Ashiru, especially amid reports linking him to both the governorship and senatorial contests ahead of 2027.

Awoyale, however, clarified that the position of Orisun Igbomina was not driven by personal hostility against any individual, but rather by the need to promote fairness, accountability and regional balance within the district.

According to him, political equity must remain central to conversations surrounding representation in Kwara South.

He argued that the Ibolo axis had enjoyed extended representation at the Senate through former lawmakers, including Bisi Oyewo, late Rafiu Ibrahim and Ashiru, while the Ekiti axis also held the position for nearly 11 consecutive years through Simon Ajibola.

By comparison, he said the Igbomina bloc only had a brief opportunity through Makanjuola Ajadi.

“The agitation for the Igbomina agenda in 2027 is rooted in equity, inclusion and political balancing rather than mere sentiment.

“We have several competent and qualified sons across different local governments who are capable of offering effective representation for the district,he stated.

Awoyale further maintained that incumbency alone should not form the basis for return tickets, especially where there were public concerns regarding performance and impact.

“Public office holders must be able to account convincingly for the mandates entrusted to them,” he said.

“Beyond titles and ranking positions, the people expect visible legislative impact, quality representation, constituency engagement, effective motions, oversight functions, and tangible developmental contributions to the district.”

He added that constituents had the democratic right to examine the records of serving lawmakers and determine whether their stewardship justified another term in office.

The Orisun Igbomina president also appealed to the leadership of the APC in Kwara State to guarantee a transparent and level playing field for all aspirants seeking elective positions in 2027.

According to him, any perception of imposition or preferential treatment could deepen internal dissatisfaction within the ruling party.

Awoyale further urged political stakeholders across Kwara South to prioritise unity, dialogue and merit in the build-up to the next election cycle.

He concluded, “2027 should not be about political monopoly or automatic succession.

“It should be about who possesses the vision, capacity, fairness and connection with the grassroots to advance the collective interests of Kwara South.”
