Jibrin Isah, senator representing Kogi east, and executives of Odu ward 2 of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dekina LGA of Kogi state, are locked in a war of words over his suspension from the party.
In a letter dated May 26 and addressed to the APC state
chairman in Lokoja, the ward executives accused Isah, popularly known as
Echocho, of engaging in anti-party activities.
They also alleged that the senator failed to deliver his
polling unit during the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections.
“It has come to the notice of the EXCO of Odu Ward 2 with
dismay the protracted anti-party activities of the serving Senator representing
Kogi East, distinguished Senator Jibrin Isah (Echocho),” the letter reads.
“The Senator failed to deliver even his own polling unit in
2019 and 2023 Kogi State Governorship elections.
“He worked against Party’s interest in his ward, Local
Government and Senatorial District in the aforementioned elections
respectively.”
The ward executives also accused the senator of holding
meetings with opposition political parties.
“The Senator has been involving himself in anti-party
activities against the Constitution of APC by holding series of meetings with
opposition political parties, an act unbecoming of the person of the status of
his personality in the party,” they alleged.
The executives said the decision to suspend the senator was
reached during a meeting held on May 26.
“Therefore, the APC Party EXCO Odu Ward 2, Dekina Local
Government of Kogi State arising from their meeting held on 26th of May 2027
resolved and have suspended Distinguished Senator Jibrin Isah (Echocho) from
APC,” the ward leaders said.
“It is our wish that this will serve as a deterrent to those
bent on working against the interest of the Party.”
ECHOCHO CAMP REJECTS SUSPENSION
However, Mikail Ibrahim, media aide to the senator,
dismissed the suspension as lacking credibility and procedural foundation.
In a rebuttal statement, Ibrahim said Isah won his polling
unit and contributed significantly to the electoral success of the party in
2019 and 2023.
“Distinguished Senator Isah Jibrin (Echocho) did not lose
his polling unit in 2019,” he said.
“He won overwhelmingly and equally delivered substantial
support for the administration of former Governor Yahaya Bello.
“Likewise, during the 2023 gubernatorial election, Senator
Echocho demonstrated unalloyed commitment to the party, delivering sizeable
votes from his polling unit and across several polling units in Kogi East
despite prevailing challenges and intense political pressure.”
Ibrahim said the senator’s empowerment programmes were
designed to strengthen APC structures in Kogi east.
“His recent mega empowerment, which saw the distribution of
vehicles to Local Government Party Chairmen, tricycles to party stakeholders,
support packages to youth leaders, women groups, and party mobilizers, was
fundamentally designed to strengthen party structures, reward loyalty, and
deepen grassroots participation within the APC family,” he said.
The aide also listed projects allegedly facilitated by the
senator across the senatorial district.
“Beyond politics, Senator Echocho’s developmental footprint
across Kogi East remains visible and undeniable,” he said.
“His interventions include the construction and renovation
of schools, establishment of Primary Healthcare Centres, establishment and
development of cottage industries, installation of solar-powered streetlights,
and support for community-based security structures.”
Ibrahim described the suspension as “a poorly conceived
social media trial”.
“We strongly advise the general public, party members, and
supporters to disregard this purported and misplaced social media suspension,
as it lacks credibility, proper procedural foundation, and moral
justification,” he added.
“Political intimidation, propaganda, and media theatrics
cannot erase years of sacrifice, loyalty, service, and visible contributions to
the growth of the party and the development of Kogi East.”
