NNPP No Longer Viable for 2027 - Kano Govt Explains Gov Yusuf’s Defection to APC

Sanusi Bature, spokesman to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, has stated that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is no longer a formidable political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Bature clarified that the defection was a strategic move by the Kwankwasiyya movement to secure a stronger position for future polls.

He emphasized that the group initially exited the NNPP not the broader Kwankwasiyya movement and noted that the movement’s ideology continues to guide governance in Kano State.

“In politics, you need to understand the context before the content. We are fully aware that NNPP is no longer a formidable political platform for the 2027 election,” Bature said.

According to him, critical stakeholders, including Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, reached a consensus to seek a more sustainable alliance.

The group reportedly approached President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the primary option.

The defection marks a significant realignment in Kano politics, as Governor Yusuf and key allies formally joined the APC to strengthen their position for the next electoral cycle.
