Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has predicted that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to the 2027 presidential race could significantly alter Nigeria’s political dynamics by weakening regional and emotional bloc voting patterns.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Shehu reacted to Jonathan’s recent comments indicating he is consulting widely in response to calls from various groups urging him to contest the election.
According to Shehu, current political mobilisation is heavily driven by sentiments along regional and emotional lines. He argued that Jonathan’s entry would “dilute bloc votes being built through sentiments.”The analyst added that the former president would particularly appeal to voters who were “deliberately misled” into opposing his re-election in 2015, as well as those who still value Jonathan’s peaceful concession of power that year.
“Those who appreciate his sacrifice in 2015 will entrust him,” Shehu stated. He concluded that if Jonathan joins the 2027 race, “he will be a sure game changer.”
This development comes amid growing speculation about the 2027 presidential contest and ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape.
