Prof. Femi Otubanjo, Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, has expressed surprise at former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s bid for the presidency, stating that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain lacks the qualities needed for the role.
Speaking on Arise News TV, Otubanjo criticized Amaechi’s decision to contest the ADC presidential primary against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He suggested that Amaechi should not have bothered entering the race.
“I’m surprised that Amaechi is struggling to be president. The problem is that Nigerians take politics as incantation; when you say something repeatedly, you feel you can do it,” Otubanjo said.
He further described Amaechi as “not an asset” to the ADC in the South, noting the party’s limited prominence in the region. “It was as if Amaechi was not in the primary. Right now Atiku has no leg in the South.
No prominent ADC member is from the South except Amaechi but Amaechi is not an asset,” he added.
The comments come after Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate following the party’s primary.
Amaechi had participated but the process has been marred by controversies and rejections from some quarters.
Otubanjo’s remarks highlight ongoing debates about political viability, regional representation, and candidate strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
