Former United States lawmaker Mike Arnold has declared his opposition to any presidential ticket that includes former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, particularly a potential pairing with former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Arnold issued the warning following reports that Obi and Kwankwaso recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), with both eyeing top positions on the party’s ticket.
In a detailed Facebook post, Arnold argued that Kwankwaso’s alleged close ties to the Sultan of Sokoto’s inner circle make him unsuitable for the vice-presidential slot alongside Obi.
He criticised Kwankwaso’s frequent party switches, describing them as never deviating from “fealty to the throne.”
The former US lawmaker raised several allegations against Kwankwaso, including his tenure as Defence Minister during sensitive periods, the implementation of Sharia law in Kano, and multiple corruption-related claims.
Arnold specifically referenced Kwankwaso’s time as Defence Minister when he claimed the then-future Sultan was serving in key OIC nations during the post-9/11 war on terror.
He linked this period to subsequent events, including the 2006 plane crash that killed top Nigerian Army generals and another crash that killed the sitting Sultan and his heir.
“As Governor of Kano State, Kwankwaso formally declared Sharia law on June 21, 2000, and established the Hisbah Board,” Arnold stated.
He also alleged misappropriation of pension funds during Kwankwaso’s second term as governor and raised concerns over ongoing investigations involving his associates.
Arnold concluded: “Sharia. Hisbah. Pension funds. Pharmaceutical contracts. The defence ministry during a genocide. A different party every cycle. And now the vice presidency. That is why I will actively oppose any ticket with Kwankwaso on it. No matter who is on top. Peter Obi, if you want my open mind, pick a running mate who is not a puppet of the Sultan.”
The development adds a new layer of controversy to the evolving political realignments ahead of future elections, as opposition figures continue to explore possible alliances.
