I Helped Tinubu Become President but Peter Obi is Phenomenon – Fayemi

Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has revealed that he played a key role in helping President Bola Tinubu win the 2023 presidential election, while describing Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as a political phenomenon.

Fayemi made the remarks during a recent interview on the State Affairs podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo.

According to Fayemi, he was instrumental in Tinubu’s emergence as president and even helped broker the deal that brought the G5 governors, including former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, into Tinubu’s campaign fold.

However, the former governor expressed concern that the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he helped build, has lost its bearing and drifted away from its founding ideals of internal democracy and progressive governance.

He criticised the increasing reliance on consensus candidates and imposition, which he said is weakening the party.

On Peter Obi’s strong performance in the 2023 election, Fayemi said:“Peter Obi is a phenomenon.”

He noted that Obi’s rise disrupted Nigeria’s traditional political calculations and reflected the deep frustrations of a younger generation of voters.

Fayemi also disclosed that he personally advised President Tinubu to reach out to Peter Obi after the election to form a more inclusive national unity government, given that Tinubu’s victory was secured with a minority of the total votes cast. His advice, he said, was not taken.

The comments come amid growing discussions about the future of the APC and political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fayemi’s statements reflect both his loyalty to the party’s past successes and his candid critique of its current direction.
