The Hisbah command in Katagum LGA in Bauchi has arrested seven men for allegedly swapping their wives among themselves.
Malam Ridwani Muhammad Khairan, head of the board in the
LGA, said the suspects are believed to be members of a group known as Wuddadu.
He described the act as an “unprecedented crime” that goes
against Islamic teachings. He added that the suspects claimed they carried out
the act after one of them, identified as Muhammad Awwal, said he had a dream
about exchanging their wives.
“One of them, Muhammad Awwal, confirmed to us that he got
this knowledge from a dream, saying that he had a dream of a prophet and that
is why they persuaded their wives to do this act,” he said.
Khairan said the alleged wife-swapping practice had
reportedly been going on in Azare town for about two years without coming to
public attention.
He revealed that the matter began to unravel after one of
the women involved reportedly said she could no longer continue with the act
and decided to leave the group.
He added that members of the group later approached him with
complaints, after which the suspects were invited and allegedly admitted to the
claims against them.
“One of the women said she couldn’t handle this paganism, so
she left them, which is when the mystery began to unravel,” he added.
“There was a group called Quddadu who came to me and said
that there were some people among them who had made a claim that was not
satisfied….we invited the people and sat with them and they confirmed their
allegations to me.”
