Gov Abdulrazaq Meets Army Chief over Fresh Attacks in Kwara

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has met with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, over renewed security threats and attacks in parts of the state.

The meeting, according to a post shared on the official Facebook page of the Kwara State Government on Monday, focused on strategies to strengthen public safety and address emerging security concerns across the state.

The government said the latest security meeting came in the wake of fresh attacks recorded in Ekiti and Yashikira communities within the last 24 hours.

“The latest meeting was held in the wake of an attack in Ekiti and Yashikira over the last 24 hours,” the government stated.

It added that additional police tactical squads had already been deployed to the affected areas to neutralise threats and restore residents’ confidence.

“Earlier today, another police tactical squad was deployed in the state to neutralise new threats in parts of the state,” the government added.

The fresh meeting followed Sunday’s deadly attack on a prayer ground at Ori-Oke Ajaiye on the outskirts of Ikiran Village in Ekiti Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed three worshippers and abducted 15 others during a night vigil.

The Kwara State Police Command had confirmed that the attack occurred on Saturday night while members of a church were observing prayers at the remote worship centre in the Ikerin/Ajuba axis of the council area.

According to the police, the incident was reported by Pastor Adebayo Abiodun of Ijo Ajaye Ati Igbala, Ekerin Village, who was leading the vigil when the assailants stormed the venue.

The Commissioner of Police said, “While conducting a night vigil alongside members of his congregation at Ori-Oke Ijaye via Ekerin village, armed hoodlums invaded the prayer ground, firing sporadically.”

In another development earlier on Monday, the police command also confirmed a coordinated midnight attack on the Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area by suspected armed bandits.

The attackers were said to have targeted both the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters and the palace of the Emir of Yashikira, abducting 10 persons, including wives and children of the traditional ruler, Alhaji Umar Seriki, while also setting part of the palace ablaze.

The police described the assault as a “coordinated and desperate operation” carried out at about 2:00 a.m.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, ordered a full-scale tactical response involving the military, police operatives, forest guards, vigilantes, and other security stakeholders to rescue the victims and track down the attackers.

“The command remains battle-ready and fully determined to confront these enemies of peace with every lawful operational asset and strategy at its disposal,” the police said.

“We will deploy everything within our operational capacity to smoke them out of hiding, dismantle their networks, rescue all abducted victims, and ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” it added.
