Genevieve Nnaji, the Nollywood veteran, has been named among the cast of the upcoming BBC drama series ‘Wahala,’ an adaptation of Nikki May’s debut novel.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) unveiled the
series’ full cast in a recent publication.
‘Wahala,’ which translates to trouble, is a six-part
thriller produced by Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto and distributed by Firebird
Pictures, an arm of BBC Studios. The series will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC
One, with BBC Studios managing global sales.
The drama is written and executive-produced by
BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko and directed by Leonora Lonsdale,
Ikoko, and Remi Weekes.
Nnaji joins a star-studded lineup that includes Adelayo
Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma.
The story follows four Nigerian-British women in their 30s
navigating careers, love, and family in London. As they grapple with mysteries
and dangers rooted in their childhood homes, buried secrets and dark pasts
threaten to unravel their dreams. The series blends tension, love, family,
suspense, tragedy, and loyalty.
Speaking on the project, Ikoko praised the cast and crew.
“I can’t wait to bring Wahala’ to life with this amazing
cast, wonderful directors and brilliantly talented crew,” she told BBC.
Nnaji said the series tells an intriguing, exciting story.
“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with
such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part
of it,” she said.
Also speaking, Lindsay Salt, BBC director of drama,
described the script as “an absolute joy and everything you would want from
Nikki May’s exquisite book brought vividly to life.”
