Fubara Loyalists React as ADC Faults APC Over Governance Crisis

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the sudden withdrawal of key aspirants from the Rivers State governorship race, with supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressing disappointment and feelings of abandonment.

Some Fubara loyalists questioned why the governor encouraged them to align with him only to step down, accusing him of failing to confront the political influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In viral videos circulating online, aggrieved supporters claimed they had been left without direction amid the unfolding political crisis.

On the other hand, supporters of Wike were seen celebrating the development, praising the minister’s political strength and declaring that “no one can reap where he did not sow."

The mood across Rivers State remained largely subdued on Thursday following the announcements.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, businessman Tonye Cole, and Wike ally George Kelly (also referred to as Dr. Dax George Kelly) had in separate statements announced their withdrawal from the governorship contest.

Reacting to the wave of withdrawals from the APC governorship primaries, the Rivers State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chukwudi Dimkpa, described the situation as an internal affair of the APC but noted that it highlighted growing dissatisfaction within the ruling party.

“This development underscores the growing dissatisfaction, uncertainty and instability within the ruling political structure, both in Rivers State and across the country,” Dimkpa said.

He added that the crisis presents opportunities for well-organised opposition parties, stating:

“For us in the ADC, and indeed for other opposition parties, the lesson is not to celebrate the challenges of others, but to recognise that Nigerians are yearning for a credible, stable and people-oriented alternative capable of restoring confidence in governance and democratic leadership.”

Dimkpa emphasised that Rivers people are tired of prolonged political conflicts and desire purposeful leadership, economic direction, improved security, employment opportunities, and renewed hope.

He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to strengthening its structures across the 23 local government areas and presenting practical solutions to the people’s challenges.
