FG Allocates N250bn for Student Hostels in Tertiary Institutions Nationwide

The Federal Government has allocated N250 billion for the construction of modern student hostels across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa has announced.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)/Public Private Partnership (PPP) hostel development project at Lagos State University (LASU) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), the minister said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to youth education and empowerment through improved student accommodation.

The projects operate under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, involving collaboration between TETFund and private investors.

Alausa provided a breakdown of the allocation:

N100 billion will fund the construction of 500-bed space student hostels in over 50 tertiary institutions, at N2 billion per project.

24 PPP hostels will be built across 24 institutions (including LASU and YABATECH), each with 1,200 to 1,500 bed spaces. For these, TETFund will contribute N1 billion per hostel while private partners will invest N3 billion, bringing the total for the PPP projects to about N96 billion.

An additional N1 billion will deliver at least 1,300 bed spaces in another set of 24 institutions.

The minister emphasised that the cumulative investment of approximately N250 billion in 2026 alone aims to provide world-class student accommodation in both federal and state tertiary institutions.

On project timelines, Alausa said the PPP hostels are expected to be completed within 24 months, while the other projects are fast-tracked for completion in less than 12 months to deliver immediate relief to students.

He commended LASU for its popularity and high student population, and disclosed that the Presidency, through TETFund, has a five-point agenda for universities.

This includes the rehabilitation of hostels, classrooms, lecture theatres, and auditoriums.
