Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has officially confirmed his approval as Nigeria’s Ambassador-Designate to South Africa, following his request for a redeployment from the initial posting to Germany.
In a statement, Fani-Kayode explained that he personally requested the change for personal reasons, expressing strong preference for South Africa due to its deep historical and strategic ties with Nigeria, its position as Africa’s largest economy, and its resonance with his pan-African convictions.
He firmly dismissed widespread reports claiming that Germany had rejected his nomination, describing the stories as “a total fabrication” and “cheap gossip” orchestrated to tarnish his image. “Germany never formally rejected me. This is a sponsored and malicious campaign,” Fani-Kayode said.
He revealed that he has already petitioned relevant security agencies and directed his legal team to commence defamation proceedings against the online platform that published the report.
The diplomatic swap was coordinated with Senator Sam Enang, who will now assume the Ambassadorial position in Germany. Fani-Kayode expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, for approving the redeployment.
He reaffirmed his commitment to national service, stating that he looks forward to strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa in his new role.
