Dare Odufowokan, senior special assistant on public communications to Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, says his principal will defeat Gbenga Daniel, senator representing Ogun East, in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary.
Speaking in an interview with TVC on Saturday, Odufowokan
said Daniel had previously admitted that Abiodun played an important role in
his emergence as a senator in 2023.
Abiodun and Daniel, a former governor of the state, have
obtained the APC nomination forms for Ogun east senatorial district.
They are at loggerheads over the political control of the
state and the senatorial ticket.
The APC primary election has been scheduled for Monday, May
18.
During a recent interview on TVC, Daniel said he would
defeat the Ogun governor in the primary election, adding that Abiodun opposed
his 2023 senatorial bid.
‘ABIODUN’S LEGACY IN OGUN EAST WILL SPEAK FOR ME’
However, Odufowokan faulted Daniel’s comment that Abiodun
did not help him to become the senator representing Ogun East senatorial
district in 2023.
The governor’s media aide added that the claim by the
senator that he was about to win the 2023 APC senatorial primary when Abiodun
intervened is untrue, noting that there was no primary election at the time.
He accused Daniel of criticising party’s stakeholders for
endorsing Abiodun as the consensus candidate for Ogun east, adding that the
former governor benefited from a similar gesture in 2023.
Odufowokan said the disagreement at the Ogun east
stakeholders’ meeting started when Daniel arrived with a busload of supporters
and insisted on driving into the meeting venue with them, which was rejected by
party leaders.
“The alleged primary referred to by Senator Gbenga Daniel
was never held. If a primary had not been held by 5pm, why is somebody claiming
to have won five local governments?” the media aide said.
“Senator Daniel never surfaced at the venue until a deal was
reached very late in the night at the palace of the late Awujale.
“Outside the venue, Senator Daniel surfaced and was telling
people that there is no cause for alarm that the governor (Dapo Abiodun) has
given me the ticket.
“Governor Abiodun will win the Ogun state primary because he
has given Ogun east legacy projects we can never forget. He has given us roads,
an airport, and health projects, among others.
“And you are saying you can defeat him in an election. After
Monday, we will continue this conversation.”
