Court Dismisses Sowore’s No-Case Submission in Tinubu Cyberbullying Trial

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday dismissed the no-case submission filed by activist Omoyele Sowore in the cyberbullying case brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS charged Sowore with cyberbullying President Bola Tinubu, specifically over an alleged post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle where he reportedly called the president a “criminal.”

In his ruling, Justice Umar held that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Sowore, successfully linking him to the alleged offences.

The court therefore ordered the activist to enter his defence in the two-count charge.

Sowore had filed the no-case submission, praying the court to discharge and acquit him, arguing that the DSS failed to prove its case. However, the judge ruled otherwise and directed him to open his defence.

The case has been closely watched as it touches on issues of free speech, online criticism of public officials, and the application of cybercrime laws in Nigeria.

Further proceedings in the matter are expected to continue in the coming days.
