Nigerians are bracing for another round of economic pressure as the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has risen sharply across the country.
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) revealed that the product now sells for as high as N1,500 per kilogram in several parts of the country, up from N1,200 per kg in Abuja.
This represents a 25% increase within a short period. In a joint statement issued at the weekend, NALPGAM President Edu Inyang and Executive Secretary Mr Bassey Essien expressed deep concern over the development, describing the new price as “prohibitive” for an essential household item.
“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over N1,500 per kg,” the association said.
The marketers warned that the unbearable price could spark public unrest, with possible backlash directed at gas station owners if the situation is not quickly addressed by the Federal Government.
The latest hike comes amid ongoing high cost of living challenges, and is expected to further inflate household expenses and food prices as many families may resort to firewood and other less efficient alternatives.
No official reaction has been received from the federal government on possible interventions to cushion the effect on citizens.
