Defence Chief deploys special forces to Oyo over abductions

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered the immediate deployment of special forces and aerial surveillance drones to Oyo State in response to recent kidnapping incidents in the state.

This directive aims to intensify search-and-rescue operations and restore security in the affected areas.

The CDS assured residents of a sustained military presence until the perpetrators are apprehended and lasting peace is restored.

Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, expressed the military’s sympathy to the affected families, the Oyo State Government, and residents.

“The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, extends his heartfelt sympathy and solidarity to the affected families, the government and good people of Oyo State,” Onoja said.

He added that the CDS directed a comprehensive reinforcement involving advanced aerial surveillance assets and specialised ground troops working closely with state authorities.

“Proactive operational steps are already yielding valuable intelligence, and troops will maintain a relentless posture until the perpetrators are brought to account and the region’s security is completely restored,” Onoja stated.

The development follows the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers from schools in Ahoro Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area, on May 15.

One teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly killed during the attack. Subsequent kidnappings, including two staff members of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in Ibadan, have heightened security concerns across the state.

The Defence Headquarters had earlier linked the attacks to dislodged terrorists from other parts of the country and dismissed claims of established terrorist bases in the South-West.

Nationwide, troops recorded notable operational successes in May, arresting 314 suspects, neutralising 118 terrorists, and rescuing 221 kidnapped civilians.
