The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue state has
announced Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, former minister of justice and
attorney-general of the federation, as its consensus governorship candidate for
the 2027 elections.
Aondoakaa clinched the ticket after 10 co-aspirants
unanimously stepped down and endorsed his candidacy.
The party’s consensus process followed weeks of
consultations by the aspirants and strategic deliberations by the PDP
leadership and stakeholders in the state.
The adoption process was led by Samuel Ortom, former Benue
governor, Abba Moro, senate minority leader, Ezekiel Adaji, PDP state chairman,
the members of the party’s state executive committee, the PDP state assembly
caucus, the influential G-14 and the G-9 blocs of the party.
The consensus decision was formally ratified by all
aspirants who publicly affirmed the credibility of the process and pledged
support for Aondoakaa’s candidacy.
Among the other governorship aspirants are Dennis Ityavyar,
former commissioner for education, and Dominic Ucha, a two-term member of the
Benue state house of assembly, who congratulated Aondoakaa and pledged full
support towards securing victory in 2027.
Other prominent aspirants, including Tor Uja, Tersoo Loko,
Sebastine Hon, Oyije Ogbenjua, Ode Ojowu, Tor Tiv Ato, Simon Ater, and Bemgba
Iortyom, endorsed the candidate and committed to working for the party’s
success.
Speaking on the development, Ortom said the outcome was a
major step towards repositioning the PDP for victory in the state.
Ortom called on stakeholders to sustain the spirit of unity
and prioritise the collective interest of Benue state, adding the need to
reclaim power from Hyacinth Alia, the incumbent governor, in 2027.
The former governor advised Aondoakaa to foster inclusivity
by integrating fellow aspirants into his campaign structure.
On his part, Abba Moro, senate minority leader, said that
the consensus move was difficult but necessary due to the urgency for providing
purposeful leadership for the state.
He called on party faithful and the people of Benue to rally
behind the PDP’s mission to “rescue” the state.
Aondoakaa pledged to begin reconciliation efforts within the
party to unite its structures into a “formidable force” ahead of the elections.
He expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him.
He further described the PDP as Nigeria’s “most successful
political party since 1999”, and assured supporters of his commitment to
delivering responsive leadership if elected governor in 2027.
