Bauchi APC Group Opposes Direct Primaries, Backs Consensus Arrangement

A political support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State, the Pate Youth Ambassadors Initiatives, has warned the party against adopting direct primaries for the 2027 general elections, citing risks of post-primary conflicts, disunity, and insecurity.

The group made the position known during a press briefing held on Saturday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Bauchi.

Speaking at the briefing, the Director-General of the initiative, Mohammed Sani, urged all APC aspirants for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly seats to embrace consensus as the preferred mode of selecting candidates.

“As a progressive youth movement committed to the peace, unity, and success of our great party, we strongly believe that consensus remains the best democratic option for APC in Bauchi State at this critical moment,” Sani said.

He argued that consensus would promote understanding, reconciliation, mutual respect, and party cohesion, while warning that direct primaries, if poorly managed, could trigger tension, political violence, division, and enmity among members.

Sani also raised security concerns, noting that organising direct primaries across multiple locations could expose party supporters and citizens to avoidable risks amid the country’s current security challenges.

The group drew lessons from past experiences during the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) era in Bauchi, where direct primaries reportedly led to disputes and multiple claims of victory, weakening the party.

“If truly we love the APC and sincerely desire the party to take over power in Bauchi State after eight years in opposition, then unity must be our top priority,” Sani added.

The Pate Youth Ambassadors Initiatives called on party executives, elders, youth and women groups to support consensus for the sake of peace and electoral success, stressing that “whoever emerges through consensus is chosen by God and accepted by the majority for the progress of the party.”
