Political tension in the Kano North Senatorial District has eased after former Minister of State for Housing, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, withdrew from the 2027 senatorial race to allow Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, to return to the National Assembly.
The consensus arrangement was brokered by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, including former National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
In a video statement released on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, Gwarzo announced his withdrawal, describing the decision as being in the interest of peace and unity within the party.
He praised Governor Yusuf’s leadership and pledged to support Senator Barau’s candidacy as well as President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in Kano.
Senator Barau, in response, commended Gwarzo for his sacrifice and thanked Governor Yusuf for restoring harmony in the APC in the senatorial district.
The development ends weeks of internal wrangling within the Kano APC, where Gwarzo had strong backing from party chieftains in Kano North, including members of the House of Representatives and State Assembly.
He had earlier obtained the nomination form and vowed to challenge Barau at the primaries.
