Aviation Union Warns Jet A1 Shortages Threaten Flight Safety in Nigeria

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has raised the alarm over persistent Jet A1 aviation fuel shortages, warning that the crisis is disrupting airline operations, worsening crew fatigue, and posing serious threats to aviation safety across Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its President, Captain Bunmi Gindeh, the union described the fuel scarcity as having evolved beyond a mere logistics issue into a critical emergency that jeopardises both operational standards and the long-term viability of the industry.

NAAPE noted that the shortages are forcing airlines to alter flight schedules, leading to extended duty hours for pilots and engineers.

This heightened crew fatigue, the union warned, erodes situational awareness and increases risks to passengers and flight operations.

The union also highlighted severe economic impacts, including grounded aircraft, frozen revenue streams, delayed salaries, and deteriorating staff welfare — all of which further compromise safety protocols.

Some airlines have already begun withdrawing services from certain routes, with Rano Air cited as an example.

NAAPE urged the federal government, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to treat the fuel supply chain as a national emergency and take decisive action to resolve the crisis before it leads to widespread route suspensions, airline closures, and massive job losses.
