Army Kills Two Suspected Bandits in Taraba

Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, have neutralised two suspected armed bandits during a tactical operation in Akate District, Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The operation, carried out on May 24, 2026, followed credible intelligence on gunshots heard in a forest near the “Welcome to Donga” signpost, prompting a swift mobilisation of troops to the area where a coordinated raid was launched.

According to a statement on Monday signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Umar Muhammad, the troops engaged the suspected armed assailants upon arrival, leading to a gun duel that resulted in the neutralisation of two suspects.

The statement added that the operation led to the recovery of weapons and other items from the scene, including one AK-47 rifle, five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two AK-47 magazines, two mobile phones, and personal belongings suspected to be linked to the fleeing elements.

“The operation was carried out on 24 May 2026 following the receipt of credible intelligence reports of gunshots heard in a forest near the ‘Welcome to Donga’ signpost in Akate District, Donga Local Government Area (LGA),” the statement said.

It further stated that troops “acted swiftly on the intelligence received” and “mobilised to the area and conducted a tactical raid,” during which contact was made with armed suspects.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the troops encountered suspected armed assailants and engaged them in a gun duel,” the statement added, noting that “during the exchange, two of the suspected criminals were neutralised.”

The Army said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to sustain pressure on criminal groups operating in the state and surrounding forest corridors.

Speaking on the development, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their conduct during the operation.

He said, “Brigadier General Akaliro commended the troops for their swiftness and professionalism,” urging them to maintain momentum in line with directives from the military high command.

He further stated that operational discipline and accountability remain central to ongoing counter-banditry efforts.

“Brigadier General Akaliro affirmed that the reward and sanction policy would also apply to the gallant troops involved in the operation,” the statement said.

The commander also reassured residents of Taraba State that the Brigade will continue sustained operations against armed groups, noting that pressure on criminal elements will be maintained until security is restored across affected communities.

“Brigadier General Akaliro further reassured residents of Taraba State that the Brigade remains resolute in its commitment to pursuing criminal elements and maintaining sustained pressure on them,” the statement added.

Military authorities said the operation forms part of broader efforts under Operation Whirl Stroke to deny bandits freedom of action in forested areas across the region.
