The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division has graduated 27 newly trained drone pilots to strengthen intelligence gathering and operational efficiency in the North West.
The graduation ceremony was held on Thursday at the Division Training School, Giginya Military Cantonment, Kaduna. The training is part of the Army’s push to integrate modern technology into operations under _Operation FANSAN YAMMA_.
Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, said the course is a key step in the Army’s drive to leverage technology-driven warfare.
Speaking at the event, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force (North West), Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the use of drones is now essential to military operations.
“The integration of drones into our operations is no longer optional; it is a necessity,” Koughna said.
“The true strength of any military force lies not just in acquiring advanced equipment, but in effectively integrating them into our operational systems.”
He noted that unmanned aerial vehicles improve situational awareness, reduce risks to troops, and enhance decision-making on the battlefield.
“The use of drones allows us to scout ahead, conserve resources, and reduce unnecessary exposure of our personnel to danger,” he added.
Course Coordinator, Captain Samuel Yakubu, described the training as a visionary initiative to give troops “eyes in the sky.” He said the programme has enhanced operational effectiveness across formations within the Division’s area of responsibility.
The 27 personnel, drawn from various units under the Division, underwent rigorous training that combined theory with practical exercises.
They were taught drone navigation using offline maps, aircraft assembly and disassembly, ground control station setup, surveillance operations, aerial imaging, takeoff and landing procedures, tactical manoeuvres, and precision landing.
The course ended with a demonstration where the new pilots showcased surveillance hovering, gimbal control, aircraft handling, and accurate coordinate acquisition. They received commendation from senior officers present.
At the close, Maj. Gen. Koughna presented wings to the graduates and awarded cash prizes to outstanding participants.
The Army said the new drone operators will support ongoing efforts against banditry and terrorism in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kaduna States.
