Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to manage the outcome of its 2027 primaries with caution to prevent an implosion that could benefit opposition parties.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with APC stakeholders in Ekiti Central Senatorial District on Thursday, Bamidele warned that parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are actively seeking to recruit aggrieved APC members.
“ADC is a new party that is looking for membership. That is exactly what ADC and some other opposition parties are waiting for so that they could have the opportunity of membership recruitment from aggrieved members of APC,” he said.
The Ekiti Central Senator cautioned party members against disloyalty and betrayal during and after the primaries, stressing that internal dissatisfaction could give opposition groups an opening.
“Opposition groups are keenly observing for any signs of division that could be exploited for recruitment. We have to manage our affairs very well,” Bamidele stated.
On the primaries process, he explained that all aspirants, including those with consensus endorsements, must go through a formal affirmation. Nigeria’s electoral framework provides for consensus and direct primaries, he noted.
“Everybody will face primaries, everybody, including myself. Even those of us that would emerge through consensus still have to go through the primaries, because I would still need people in all the 57 wards of Ekiti Central to vote for me by affirmation,” he said.
Bamidele advised aspirants who may not secure tickets not to see it as personal failure. “It could be that it’s not their timing yet. It could also be that certain geopolitical considerations might not favour them at the particular time. But what’s important is to remain consistent and relevant within the party.”
He stressed that unity and discipline are key to keeping the APC strong ahead of the 2027 polls.
