Former Governor of Jigawa State and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has cautioned former President, Goodluck Jonathan against returning to active politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lamido, in a statement posted on his official Facebook page,
described the current political atmosphere in the country as “murky” and
dominated by “unserious, self-seeking and self-serving characters.”
He said it would be unfair to drag Jonathan into the
political contest barely a week before the close of nominations for candidates
seeking various elective offices in the 2027 elections.
According to the former governor, Jonathan occupies a unique
position in Nigeria as a former president and global statesman, stressing that
he should preserve the dignity attached to that status rather than be drawn
into what he termed a desperate political struggle.
“Former President Jonathan understands his position in
Nigeria as a leader in his capacity as a former president, thus making him a
sovereign symbol,” Lamido stated.
He added that the growing calls urging Jonathan to return to
the political arena were largely driven by frustration over the country’s
current challenges and not by any well-structured political ideology.
Lamido further argued that many of the existing political
parties lack clear ideological direction beyond the quest for power.
“The call for President Jonathan to hop into the political
arena, no matter how well-intentioned, stems from the helplessness and
hopelessness Nigeria has found itself,” he said.
The PDP chieftain maintained that while the appeals for
Jonathan’s return may be appreciated, they amount to a “desperation call”
lacking depth and long-term vision.
He, therefore, advised the former president not to succumb
to what he described as “ego-caress calls,” insisting that Jonathan should
remain above partisan struggles for now.
“We can save him for the future,” Lamido added.
