2027: Politicians Treat Zoning as Means to Win Presidential Election – Dele Momodu

Prominent publisher and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has criticised Nigerian politicians for using zoning as a primary strategy to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election rather than focusing on competence and governance issues.

Momodu made the remarks on Tuesday during a live interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. He argued that political actors, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the camp of President Bola Tinubu, are pushing the zoning narrative because they believe it is their surest path to retaining power.

According to him, zoning has become a convenient distraction from the pressing economic and social challenges facing Nigerians. “Politicians now treat zoning as the only credential needed to win presidential elections,” Momodu said. “It’s a distraction, and I can say it without any fear of contradiction, that it is not what we need at this time.”

He acknowledged that those advocating for zoning have the right to their political preferences but stressed that winning elections ultimately requires effective strategy, ideas, and performance rather than relying solely on rotational arrangements.

The Ovation Magazine publisher’s comments come amid growing debates over power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various political interests already positioning themselves along regional and zoning lines.
