Hon. Chille Igbawua, a former governorship aspirant and Adviser to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Chairman, Senator David Mark, has criticised Peter Obi’s decision to leave the ADC, describing it as a wrong move.
Igbawua, who also served as a member of the ADC Electoral Panel, said Obi should have remained in the party to contest the presidential primary and learn valuable lessons even if he lost to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday evening, Igbawua insisted that the ADC primary provided a level playing field for all aspirants.
He cited results from Benue State as an example, where Atiku reportedly scored 55,000 votes, Rotimi Amaechi 30,000, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen 22,000.
“We started this process of the coalition, and I was there at the beginning, from where we adopted ADC as the political platform,” Igbawua said.
He added that staying in the race would have allowed participants to test their strength and improve for future contests.
When asked if Obi might be relieved for leaving, Igbawua replied: “I don’t think he can thank his heavens… I don’t think he made the right choice, as far as I’m concerned.”
Igbawua stressed that the coalition was originally about saving Nigeria rather than personal ambition, and urged leaders to make sacrifices for the greater good instead of abandoning the platform when their personal interests are not met.
Peter Obi recently left the ADC and is now the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
