The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially cleared Mustapha Sule Lamido, its 2023 governorship candidate in Jigawa State, as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 election.
Lamido was screened and cleared by the PDP screening committee in Abuja on Thursday, May 15, 2026.
He was the sole aspirant processed for the Jigawa governorship ticket ahead of the party’s primary slated for May 21.
This positions him to challenge the incumbent Governor Umar Namadi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
Speaking after the screening, Lamido said his ambition is driven by a strong desire to deliver positive change and tackle the pressing needs of Jigawa residents.
He expressed worry over the rising trend of political defections, blaming it on weak ideological commitment among some politicians.
The younger generation, he noted, is committed to overhauling the country’s political system through purposeful and dedicated leadership.
Lamido praised the PDP as the only major opposition party with robust ideologies capable of meeting the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
He recalled that the party garnered over 400,000 votes in the previous election and voiced confidence that the PDP would achieve stronger results in 2027.
Lamido, son of former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, had earlier picked up the nomination form and secured consensus support from the state chapter of the party.
