A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Taminu Turaki, says former President Goodluck Jonathan’s reported 2027 presidential bid is a response to public demand, not his personal ambition.
The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, made this known on Saturday after the group declared Jonathan its presidential candidate in absentia.
“At a time like this, Goodluck Jonathan’s running is not his ambition but a call from the people for him to run,” Ememobong told reporters.
He added that Nigeria needs “four years of healing, restoration, patience and nation building” and described Jonathan as the leader best suited for that task.
Jonathan has not made any public statement confirming or denying plans to contest in 2027.
The declaration deepens the internal divisions within the PDP as party stakeholders jostle for control ahead of the next general elections.
