Sixteen people lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Lokoja-Okene highway in Kogi State on Friday morning.
Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 9:20 a.m. at Aku village near Osara.
The accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD, travelling from Jos in Plateau State to Lagos with 22 passengers on board 21 males and one female.
According to the FRSC, the driver’s fatigue caused the bus, which was travelling at high speed, to veer off the road and plunge under a bridge.
The crash killed 16 occupants, comprising 15 males and the only female passenger.FRSC officers promptly responded to a distress call and rescued the six surviving passengers, who sustained various degrees of injuries.
The injured were rushed to health facilities in Osara and the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja for treatment, while the corpses were deposited at the Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
The FRSC has urged all road users to remain safety-conscious, avoid fatigue, and strictly obey traffic regulations while on the road.
