Wike’s Threat To Shoot Journalist On Live TV Sparks Outrage

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is under heavy criticism following his controversial comment suggesting he would have “shot” Channels Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye.

The remark came during Wike’s monthly media chat while reacting to Okinbaloye’s statements on Wednesday’s edition of Politics Today. The presenter had stressed the need for competitive politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

“What makes the race very interesting is when it’s competitive and not when only one party stands… If this hope is dashed, we are doomed democratically speaking,” Okinbaloye said.Wike accused the journalist of taking sides and abandoning neutrality, saying:

“When I was watching Politics Today, Seun… If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him. You are an interviewer; you are now telling them your own views.”Though Wike later clarified he meant no physical harm, the comment has sparked widespread outrage.

A coalition of 14 civil society and media rights groups condemned the statement in a joint release, describing it as intimidating and capable of creating a climate of fear for journalists. They demanded a public apology from the minister.

The controversy has also dominated social media discussions, with many Nigerians calling the remark unbecoming of a public official.

The incident has once again raised concerns about press freedom and the relationship between government officials and the media in Nigeria.
