Wike Supporting Tinubu While Claiming PDP National Leadership is 'Unconstructive' - Ulasi

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Ulasi, has criticised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, describing it as unconstructive for him to position himself as the party's national leader while openly backing President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

Ulasi argued that it is inconsistent for anyone to lead a major opposition party like the PDP—which has not yet conducted its primaries or produced a presidential candidate—while declaring support for the incumbent president from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"You cannot be a leader of a national party that hasn’t held its primaries, with no candidate yet emerged, and say you’re supporting the incumbent," Ulasi stated. He raised practical concerns about party activities, questioning how such dual loyalty would play out during campaigns.

"What will Wike do when we hold rallies? He has some explaining to do, and if I’m not satisfied, the public will hear from me," the PDP chieftain added.

The remarks come amid ongoing tensions within the PDP over Wike's continued influence in the party despite his role in the Tinubu administration and his repeated affirmations of support for the president's second-term bid. Wike has maintained that he remains a PDP member while choosing to back Tinubu based on his assessment of available political options.

Ulasi's comments highlight the deepening divisions in the opposition party as it grapples with internal leadership crises and prepares for future electoral contests. This situation underscores the challenges facing the PDP in presenting a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
